Individual counseling
Most people that use De Wit Consultancy’s (DWC) services don’t feel comfortable seeking help from a large organization. Usually the situation is not perceived as serious enough and/or there is a higher degree of discretion required.
In most cases DWC doesn’t see substance abuse (or addiction) as a disease and uses the term substance dependency. The way in which dependence has developed or been learnt through the years, as a result of various causes, can be turned around to incorporate new learned behaviours.
Step by step
The number of sessions required varies per client. On average 10 to 20 sessions are necessary to achieve the desired result. This does not mean that the ultimate goal is always completely stopping the use of alcohol and/or (soft)drugs. Through supportive, structure-oriented and insightful talks you will learn step by step - using a behavioural method - different ways to cope with your substance dependency. Your eyes will be opened to new possibilities. Your self-esteem will be strengthened and you will quickly feel a lot better. You will be more relaxed in your (work) relationship(s) and increase the quality of your life.
DWC is not a self-help organization
Most private clinics are run by rehabilitated substance abusers. They usually use the Minnesota - (or 12 step) - model initiated by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA, a self-help organization). DWC takes a neutral position as far as self-help is concerned. However DWC does not support, as propagated by the 12 step plan, giving yourself over to a higher power. DWC is not religious. Our approach is realistic and pragmatic. Attainable goals are set, gearing towards the here and now and the foreseeable future. This approach avoids frustration during counseling and the majority of clients at DWC finish their sessions completely satisfied.
Cooperation
If necessary DWC will consult your general practitioner. Especially when medication is involved. Of course this will only occur with written consent from the client. DWC works with Mr. Piet Hein van Ham (an independent psychiatrist), through which a referral for admission* can be obtained without going through the public care system. DWC is affiliated with 1Np, a network organization for GGZ (psychiatric health) professionals. For this reason, after a referral from the client’s physician, cost of treatment will be covered. The intake and treatment plan will be adapted. The client will need to be seen by a psychiatrist to receive treatment compensation. De Wit Consultancy works closely with Mr. Jan Willem de Vos and Mr. Hans van Wechem (psychiatrists in Amsterdam).
